This Tuesday we’re going to continue our series that we started last week with TOEFL Reading Advice. The next section is, similar to on the TOEFL itself, the listening section.
TOEFL listening, which is the second section of the TOEFL, surprises many students the first time they try it. It’s not extremely different from listening exercises you may have done in English classes or on other English tests, but it’s probably at least a little bit different in at least one way. Specifically, the recordings can be long (a little over five minutes, sometimes) and you don’t see the questions until the recording is finished. That causes some problems for many students…
TOEFL Listening Common Problem 1: Focus and Memory
Because there is a lot of information in the recording, it can be difficult to pay attention the whole time. That’s especially true because the lectures are about topics that maybe you’re not interested in. Can you stay focused on all the details of a five-minute lecture about the different types of Mexican cactus? And even if you listen closely the whole time, can you remember all the details?
The conversation recordings are a bit easier, mostly because they are shorter (3+ minutes), but this same issue is clear on the whole TOEFL listening section.
TOEFL Listening Tip 1: Take Notes
The truth is that there is so much information in a lectures and conversations, you basically have to take some notes. Even if you don’t like taking notes, or you have trouble listening and writing at the same time, you should still practice your notes. That helps you stay focused on the recording—when you are preparing to write, you have to listen closely for the information that you will write—and also helps you remember the details of the recording after it’s finished.
This is a pretty obvious piece of advice, because so many books and teachers focus on TOEFL notes. Let’s go a little bit more in detail about specific problems in those notes.
TOEFL Listening Common Problem 2: Too Many Notes!
Sometimes we say in English “too much of a good thing.” Take exercise, for example. It’s clearly good for you, and it feels good, but if you exercise all day, every day? You might hurt yourself, for one, and you might have trouble keeping a job. Anything can be bad if you do it too much. TOEFL notes are this way.
If you try to write every single detail you hear, you will not succeed. It’s impossible to write everything! You have to to choose the information you write. Otherwise, you may write down unimportant details, but miss a main point. And then when you answer questions, you won’t be able to remember the information that you need, which is clearly a problem.
TOEFL Listening Tip 2: Structural Notes
Don’t try to write every detail you hear in the TOEFL listening section. Instead, write only the big ideas. If you think about how the lecture or conversation is structured, then you can write only a few lines of notes about the big ideas.
The key here is that writing structural notes helps your memory, not just the information you have on the paper. When you answer questions, you’re going to use both. That is, you will look at your notes and try to remember what you heard. Students who try to write everything don’t use their memories enough. But if you use the notes only to help your memory, not replace it, then you will have maximum detail when answering questions.

Grow your English vocabulary!
Grow your English vocabulary and use more colorful language with our
interactive flashcards! Listen carefully to the questions and
sentences.
Remember that subjects and verbs must agree! I walk. He walks!
Also remember that subjects and verbs can reverse in questions. How is
he? He is happy!
Let's take a look at our first character. A diver is swimming and is
surprised by a giant squid! How does he feel? Is he scared? Is he
surprised? Is he nervous? The squid is very close, but the diver's
face doesn't look worried. We think he looks awed! To be awed is to
experience a wide range of amazing emotions. You may experience fear,
happiness, and deep respect when awed. To be awed is to see something
amazing that changes your life. What are you awed by?
What about this character? Does he look pleased? Is he happy? Is he
excited? Is he mad? This is a scarecrow, and it should be keeping
crows away. Unfortunately, this scarecrow isn't doing a very good job.
He also can't move and is being picked at by the crows. He looks more
than unhappy. He looks bitter! To be bitter means to be both unhappy
and angry when you're unable to change your situation. When have you
felt bitter?
Have a look at our next character. Is he a rock star? Is he famous? Is
he loved? In his glasses we see tons of fans. Do they look happy to
see him? When something is interesting, you want to pay attention to
it and explore it. But a more appropriate word in this instance would
be captivating! Captivating is stronger than interesting and you are
really pulled in by something that captivates you. Is this video
captivating?
Our next pair of characters looks like a typical fat guy/skinny guy
duo that you see on TV shows. Are they friends? Are they having a good
time? When you see something so many times that it becomes boring and
common, it becomes clichéd. Expressions can be clichés, too. The
phrase, "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link," has been used
so many times that it's become common and clichéd. Can you think of
any clichés?
Our next character is going fishing. Does he look scary? Is he evil?
This boy is being more than mean by fishing in a goldfish bowl; he is
being cruel! While being mean is to do something bad to someone else,
a cruel person is happy when hurting others. The boy in this
interactive flashcard knows that the fish has no chance and is
delighted by it. Don't be cruel to others!
Does this character look excited? Is he looking forward to life? What
is he thinking about? In his hat we see an image of a church and
graveyard. The scene is dark and grim. While it's easy to say that
this character looks sad, we want you to have fun using a more
colorful word like dejected! To be dejected is to feel very down.
Maybe he's thinking about death. What's in your hat?
Our next flashcard is a tricky one. Is the man rich? Is he well-known?
The man has an eye patch, so something terrible may have happened to
him. But he also has a thick mustache and a bow tie. Is he a spy? Is
he intelligent? We think he looks distinguished! To be distinguished
is to be marked by eminence or excellence. Maybe he's a war hero! Do
you know anyone distinguished?
Have a look at our last character. Does he look like he's having a
good time? Is he energetic? Is he positive? What happened to him? He's
wearing the crown and robes of a king, but he is lost and floating at
sea far from his castle. He is alone, tired and helpless. You can say
he looks depressed, but a more colorful word would be despondent. To
be despondent means to be extremely sad and depressed. You are sad
when the movie you want to rent isn't available. You are despondent
when your home is blown away by a tornado. Have you ever been
despondent?
Go back and watch this video many times so you remember the words and
get a good understanding of how subjects and verbs agree. Practice
repeating the sentences and then get out and use the words and phrases
with native speakers! Have fun and enjoy getting fluent in English!

In English Pronunciation, Sentence Stress is one of the most difficult things for students to master, but it is very important if you want to really take your English pronunciation to the HIGHEST LEVEL!
In this lesson, I'm going to show you how Sentence stress works in English, and how to listen and hear the 'rhythm' of English, which many people call it's 'music'. This English lesson about Sentence Stress will help you to understand when Native speakers are speaking very fast and also help you to speak faster in English too!
Firstly, one important thing to know, is that in English we can divide words into CONTENT words and GRAMMAR words. Content Words are important, they are Nouns, Adjectives and Verbs. Grammar Words are less important, they are pronouns and prepositions etc. The tempo of English, that means the speed at which people speak and read, is set normally by the CONTENT words. In this lesson I show you a great example of this and how this is the reason many learners of English become confused when they hear native english speakers saying some words REALLY fast and others slower and more loudly.
Secondly, when you EMPHASIZE (stress) a word in English you can change the meaning of a sentence. I show you another great example of this in this Video Lesson.
When you are speaking English, if you find that other people are not understand you easily, it might be because you are not using STRESS and INTONATION correctly. Hopefully, after this video, you will understand it a bit better and can improve in this area of English Pronunciation.

What's the difference between hurricane and Harry Kane? And what's the difference between the Super Bowl and a super bowl? Well, the answer is word stress, and it's a really important aspect of pronunciation. And today I'm going to teach you 8 simple word stress rules so that you can speak English more clearly and accurately. Let's go.
So before we start, there is a simple way for you to know where the stressed syllable is in every word in English, and that is by just learning some basic phonetics. If you look in the dictionary and see the phonetic transcription for a word, there is a little apostrophe type thing just before the stressed syllable in every word. And every word in English has just one stressed syllable. So look at these words and also listen to hear how I stress the stressed syllable in these words. Photograph, photograph. Here the stressed syllable is the first syllable, pho- photograph. Photography, photography. See the little apostrophe before the second syllable? Photography. And photographic, photographic. Here we stress the third syllable, photographic, and you have the little ' before that in the phonetic transcription. So learn some phonetics, it will make your life easier, I promise.
Okay, so let's have a look now at these 8 simple rules. Every rule has exceptions in English, so maybe we should call them guidelines, whatever you want to call them. We have 8 simple ways for you to speak more clearly using correct word stress in English. So let's go.
Okay, the first rule is related to words that have 2 syllables. So look at these nouns that have 2 syllables and tell me where the stress is. Campus, county, maker, picture, water, entry. That's right. With 2 syllable nouns, the stress goes on the first syllable. Now, listen to these adjectives. Happy, pretty, royal, mobile, local. Again, with nouns and adjectives that have 2 syllables, we stress the first syllable. And don't worry, I've put all these examples and a summary of all today's rules in a free worksheet for you. You can download that PDF and get all of these examples and rules for your reference just for you. There's a link up there and there's a link in the description too.
Okay, let's have a look at some more words with 2 syllables. Okay, rule 2 also relates to words that have 2 syllables, but in this case, we're looking at verbs. So listen to these verbs and tell me where the stress is. Repeat, collect, forgive, allow, prefer, impose. That's right. With verbs that have 2 syllables, the stress is on the second syllable. And yes, there are exceptions. Feel free to write any exceptions in the comments, but generally, this rule is true.
Now, there are some situations where we have one word that can be a verb and a noun. So what do we do in those situations? Well, that's rule number 3.
[... Due to character limit, the rest of this transcription is unavailable]

How Jolly Phonics works
Jolly Phonics is a comprehensive programme, based on the proven, fun and muliti-sensory synthetic phonics method that gets children reading and writing from an early age. This means that we teach letter sounds as opposed to the alphabet. These 42 letter sounds are phonic building blocks that children, with the right tools, use to decode the English language. When reading a word, they recognise the letters and blend together the respective sounds; when writing a word they identify the sounds and write down the corresponding letters. These skills are called blending and segmenting. These are two of the five skills that children need to master phonics:
Learning the letter sounds:
Children are taught 42 letter sounds, which is a mix of alphabet sounds (1 sound – 1 letter) and digraphs (1 sound – 2 letters) such as sh, th, ai and ue. Using a multi-sensory approach each letter sound is introduced with fun actions, stories and songs. We teach the letter sounds in 7 groups of 6 letters at a pace of 4-5 sounds a week. Children can start reading after the first group of letters have been taught and should have been introduced to all the 42 letter sounds after 9 weeks at school.
Learning letter formation:
This is taught alongside the introduction of each letter sound. Typically, children will learn how to form and write the letters letter down during the course of the lesson.
Blending:
Once the first few letter sounds are learnt, children begin blending the sounds together to help them read and write new words.
Segmenting:
When children start reading words, they also need to start identifying the phonic components that make the word sound the way it does. By teaching blending and segmenting at the same time children become familiar with assembling and breaking down the sounds within words.
Tricky words
These are words with irregular parts, such as ‘who’ and ‘I’. Children learn these as exceptions to the rules of phonics. Introducing the common tricky words early in the year increases reading fluency (as they frequently occur in those first simple sentences you might expect them to read).
If you would like to try teaching new letter sounds to your child, you should complete all of the following steps.
Step 1 - Story containing the sound
Step 2 - Action
Step 3 - Flashcard
Step 4 - Letter Formation
Step 5 - Blending
Step 6 - Sounding
Step 7 - Dictation
Step 8 - Song
The Jolly Phonics Lessons App is very useful in providing all of the content that you need for teaching the different steps. There are also guidance and activity sheets available to download in the resources section of this website.
Remember, the letter sounds should be taught in the order set out above, so start with Group 1 sounds and move on from there.
Step 1 - Story
Introduce a new sound to your child by telling the Jolly Phonics story containing the sound. For example, for the /s/ sound, there is a story about a snake that goes “ssssss”.
See the resources page for stories that you can download, or find the stories in the Jolly Phonics Lessons App.
Try to be fun and engaging whilst telling the story.
Step 2 - Action
Whilst saying the sound, demonstrate the action for that sound to your child. Ask them to do the action with you. For example, for the /s/ sound, the action is wiggling your arm around like a snake.
Find pictures and descriptions of all the actions on the downloadable actions sheet on the resources page, and also in the Phonics Lessons App.
Step 3 - Flashcard
Show your child the letters that form the sound by holding up a flashcard. Ask your child to say the sound and do the action each time you hold up the flashcard. Revise all of the sounds taught so far by showing the different flashcards one-by-one.
Make your own flashcards like the teacher has in the picture or use the flashcard on the Phonics Lessons App.
Step 4 - Formation
Show your child how to write the letter. Use your fingers as “magic pencils” to form it in the air, on the ground and on each other’s backs. Practice writing the letter with a pencil on paper using the “froggy legs grip”.
Step 5 - Blending
Show your child some words with the sounds in that they have learnt so far. Say the sounds individually together and then blend them together to read the words.

Have your child learn with a real teacher, Ms Rachel!
The toy used in this video has small parts and is not for children under 3 years old.
Learn the alphabet, letters, letter sounds, and phonics with fun ABC Acorn Toys! In this Toddler Learning Video, you will learn all 26 letters of the alphabet and all of their sounds! We also show both the uppercase and lowercase letters to help your child become familiar with both. After all of the letters and sounds we will show the alphabet song. Phonics, phonics songs and learning letter sounds are an excellent way to start helping your child learn to read. You will also see hand cues for many of the sounds. We wanted to create a video with all of the letters and all of their sounds, that also showed a catchy and easy to remember song to practice the sounds. We know you will love learning your ABCS with Ms Rachel and her team of experts in early childhood education.
If your child learns to identify their letters (uppercase and lowercase) and even some of their letter sounds before preschool and kindergarten, they will be in excellent shape! You should also focus on teaching them social emotional skills such as how to share, take turns, what to do when another child takes a toy they are playing with, how to handle big emotions and self regulation. Social emotional skills are incredibly important for success in preschool!
If you think your child has a speech delay or is not meeting their milestones, definitely talk to your pediatrician now. Also, call early intervention. Every state in the United States has Early Intervention. You may qualify for free speech therapy or other therapies through your state's early intervention program. You can also get evaluated by a private speech therapist. The earlier you do this, the better! Sometimes kids need speech, OT and/or physical therapy.
