TOEFL Listening Question Types and Strategies - Part 1

I explain two question types that can appear in TOEFL Listening and I show you strategies on how to solve them. We have a look at detail questions and main idea questions. I tell you tips and tricks how you can solve these question types and improve your TOEFL Listening score quickly and considerably. I also tell you when you have to pay attention so that you do not fall into traps.

VIDEOS YOU MAY LIKE

TOEFL Listening - How to Score High - 5 Tips: https://youtu.be/PDztt14thZM
TOEFL Reading Question Types and Strategies: https://youtu.be/lAWwD-M9aMk

FYI
The examples I use in the video are made up by me.

1) Detail Questions
Detail questions ask you about key facts in the listening. You can recognise them because they usually contain the words “What, why how,….”. For example, detail questions can look like this:
According to the professor, why is this theory problematic?
What does the student think about the professor's idea?

Strategy: Listen for the Right Things
In TOEFL Listening detail questions ask you about a very specific key fact in the listening. The problem is that you will listen to a lot of details. Some of these details are important and some are not. You have to filter out the important information.

Fortunately, there is a trick you can use: You must know how detail questions look before taking the TOEFL. If you know them, you can focus on the right information and take notes. Thus, when you are doing the TOEFL Listening section listen actively for explanations, reasons, and so on because this is the information you need to answer detail questions in TOEFL Listening correctly.

2) Main Idea Questions
Main idea questions ask you about the main idea of the listening. For example, main idea questions can look like this:
What do the professor and the student mainly talk about?
What is the lecture mainly about?

Strategy: Get the Big Picture
To solve main idea questions you have to get the big picture. It works like this: Listen to the conversation/lecture until the end. Only when you have heard the whole conversation/lecture can you decide what the main idea is.

In a conversation the student and the professor will talk about a main point and one or several side points. The side points are there to confuse you. ETS wants to check whether you understand what the main idea of the conversation is.

In the lecture the professor will talk about a specific topic. Do not think that the topic the professor mentions at the beginning of the lecture is automatically the main idea. For example, it may be that the professor introduces different theories, that he gives reasons why a theory may be valid and so on. At the end of the lecture you have to look back and decide what he was mainly talking about. Ask yourself: What did the professor spend the most time on?

TOEFL Listening - How to score high - 5 Tips

I tell you my 5 top tips for getting a high score in TOEFL Listening. I scored 29 in TOEFL Listening and I was really nervous about it because listening is a challenge. It can be really hard because you must listen to a lot of information in the TOEFL and you cannot listen to it again, this means that you can only rely on your notes and memory when answering the questions. Therefore, you need a listening strategy in order to get a high TOEFL score.

TOEFL LISTENING
In TOEFL Listening you will listen to conversations and lectures in English. Usually, the listening tasks will be about topics that you encounter in a university setting. For example, there may be conversations between a student and a professor or a lecture about an academic topic. First, you listen to a task, after that you need to answer questions regarding this listening task. The questions in TOEFL Listening can be about the main point, a function of something, they can ask about details and much more. If you have the right strategy, you have everything you need to get a high score in TOEFL Listening.

HOW TO WORK WITH THIS VIDEO
1. Watch the video and make sure you understand everything.
2. Download the summary.
3. Use the summary for your TOEFL preparation.

FYI
The examples I use in the video and in the summary are made up by me.

1) FOCUS
In TOEFL Listening you do not need to understand everything. Yeah, that’s right! It's not necessary to get a high TOEFL Listening score. Your score does not depend on whether you understand everything but on whether you understand the important things. You only need to understand the information that is necessary to answer the questions correctly. In TOEFL Listening you will listen to a ton of information. If you try to understand everything this may even lower your score because you do not focus anymore which means you will not know the important information when answering the questions. This means that you must focus on the stuff that gets you points - ignore the rest! Now the crucial question is: how do you know what you need to focus on? Let’s have a look at the next tip.

2) KNOW THE QUESTION TYPES
In TOEFL Listening you will always get similar questions for a particular type of task. For example, usually there is a task where a student goes to see a professor. If you listen to such a conversation, it is probable that you will be asked why the student goes to see the professor. If you know that beforehand, you will be in a good position because when you listen to the passage you can already anticipate potential questions - and normally some of the questions you anticipate will be asked. This means if you know the types of tasks in TOEFL Listening you will be able to focus on the right things when listening.

3) TAKE GOOD NOTES
To get a high score in TOEFL Listening you must take notes in such a way that they help you to answer the questions correctly. What is really hard in TOEFL Listening is that you get so much information and you cannot listen to the stuff again, this means that you can only rely on your notes and on your memory . Your notes must contain the information that you need for the questions. Only write down keywords, use your own words, try to abbreviate words whenever possible and use symbols.

4) CHOOSE AN ANSWER
If you are unsure which answer you should choose, go with your gut. Do not skip the question.
Better choose an answer you are uncertain with than no answer at all. You do not get penalty points in TOEFL Listening and there is always the possibility that you choose the correct answer. Take that chance!

5) PRACTISE LISTENING
To get a high TOEFL Listening score you must practise listening to spoken English. Take every chance you get: listen to English-speaking TV series, listen to the news in English. This will help you to get used to the language and especially to informal English which is really important because spoken English is a bit different from written English.

TRANSCRIPT

Hi. I'm Rebecca from www.engvid.com. Do you want to get a higher score on your TOEFL, or IELTS, or TOEIC essay? In the next five minutes I'm going to show you how to do this in a really easy way. You just have to follow two easy steps. Take your essay question and find the key words there, and then replace them with synonyms. Now, that might seem very easy and obvious, but you'd really, really be surprised to know that lots of students don't do that. What they do instead is that throughout their essay they keep using the same words that are used in the essay question. And if you do that, what you're showing is that you don't have a very good vocabulary, you don't have a rich vocabulary, you don't use... You don't have many synonyms to express the same ideas and thoughts. And what you need to do instead is to show off your vocabulary, and the way you can do it is to take the question, find the key words and make sure that you can generate lots of synonyms for those key words, because if you can do that then you'll use all those kind of synonyms throughout your essay instead of repeating the same vocabulary. Isn't it kind of a shame when you only have maybe 250 words on your IELTS essay or 300 to 350 on your TOEFL essay to keep using the same vocabulary? Don't do that. Learn to do something a little bit differently.

Let's see how to do it. Okay? So I've got a sample question, here, from the TOEFL exam. A part of the question. This is... This says: "Many students choose to attend university outside their home countries." Okay? And maybe after that they said: "Do you agree or disagree?" or something like that. Okay? Doesn't matter. So, what are the...? How do you find the key words? Key words are almost any of the important words. For example: "many". Right? So if you're going to talk about this in your essay and you're going to give your opinion, then you want to use different words. So what could you use instead of "many"? Well, try to make a list. For example, I made my list: "myriad students", "countless", "an increasing number". It could be another word, it could be an expression. Anything that expresses the basic idea. And sometimes when you're using a synonym you're expanding on the idea, and that's okay, too. You're changing the idea a little bit, and that's all right. That's fine. So, that was one of the key words.

Second key word: "students". If they said "students" in the essay question, don't use the word "students" every time in your essay. Use another word, like: "pupils", or "young people", or "scholars". Okay? Again, changing the meaning. "Scholar" is not exactly students, but it's okay to use that word somewhere. It also shows you have a lot of vocabulary, rich vocabulary.

Next: "choose to". Right? Instead of saying: "...students choose to", what else could you say? You could say: "they decide to", "they opt to", "they prefer". All right? So, what I'm suggesting that you do is take some of the essay questions. Right? And when you're practicing before the exam, just from the essay questions see if you can generate lots of synonyms for the words used in the essay question. If you can do that, believe me, you're going to use those words in your essay writing.

Let's see how it continues. "...to attend", "Many students choose to attend", what could you use instead of "attend"? You could say: "to join", "to enroll in", "to apply to", "to pursue undergraduate studies" or "pursue graduate studies". All right? Again, we're changing the meaning a little bit, but it's the same basic idea. Right? Because in order to attend you need to enroll, you need to apply, etc.

"Many students choose to attend university", here's another key word. Instead of saying "university" 15 times in your essay, you might want to say: "academic centres", or "an academic program", or "institutes of higher learning", or an "educational institution", or "school", "college", "academy". Okay? Instead of the word "university". Don't keep using the same word. Use the same idea, but not necessarily the same word.

Next. Next part, key part: "...outside their home countries". Instead of saying: "outside their home countries", say: "abroad", "overseas", "in a foreign country", "away from their homeland". Right?

Now, you don't have to write this sentence again, but what I'm asking you to do is to take the question, find the key words, and see if you can come up with lots of vocabulary for that.

A key component of the IELTS and TOEFL essays is the use of vocabulary. Lexical resource is not just about using big words; it is about using the right words in the right way. This means the correct collocation, the appropriate phrasal verb or idiom, and the right synonym.

In this video, we look at some of the more common words used to discuss transportation and travel. Though some may appear simple, it is important to know their usage and the differences between similar wordings.

There is also an essay task at the end of the video for you to practice.
