The IELTS and TOEFL writing section measures your Lexical Resource, meaning your ability to use a variety of words and expressions. One way to lose points is to repeat words, or to use the same vocabulary that most other writers are using in the same situations.

For example, the words decide, choose, believe, consider, get, buy, negative, drawback, and disadvantage are commonly used words in the IELTS and TOEFL writing section, especially the essay.

In this video, we offer some alternatives:
elect to, opt to/for
hold, deem
acquire, procure
detriment

While these may not seem to be “big” words, they are highly effective, less common, and most importantly, they are correct. See them used in examples, with explanations.
