The Structure of Lectures

In TOEFL Listening all lectures have the same basic structure: each lecture has an introduction, a body and a conclusion. However, there are different types of lectures and this is reflected in the body paragraph. It is important that your notes reflect this structure because this will help you immensely when answering the questions in TOEFL Listening.

1) The Theories Lecture

In this type of lecture the professor talks about several theories that explain something. For example, she may present different theories about the extinction of dinosaurs.

Usually, this lecture goes like this: First, the professor states the name of the theory. You should write this down because this is your heading for all the information that the professor is going to provide regarding this theory. Second, she explains what this theory says. You should write down a few keywords regarding this explanation. After that she may state arguments for and/or arguments against this theory. I recommend writing down a + for arguments in favour of the theory and a - for arguments against the theory because this saves you time. It is important that you take notes in this way because these are the key points of the lecture. You need these key points in order to answer the questions in TOEFL Listening correctly.

At some point the professor will go on and talk about the second theory. It is likely that she is going to use the exact same structure as for the first theory and this means that you can use the same structure for note taking. Usually, the professor goes on like that until she has explained all the theories she wanted to talk about. It is likely that she is going to draw a conclusion about which theory currently prevails. Make sure that you do not miss that because you may get a question about that.

2) The 1-Topic Lecture

In this lecture type the professor talks about a single topic. For instance, she might talk about a disease or a theory. Usually, the professor divides the body of the lecture into several parts. You must listen actively for that because this determines how you have to take notes.

For example, imagine that the professor talks about a disease. She may point out the causes for this disease, the consequences of the disease, and how the disease can be cured. These are the key points of the lecture and it is likely that you will have to answer questions about these points. Or imagine that the professor talks about a specific theory. She might provide an explanation, talk about the history of the theory, and the reactions of scientists to this theory.

You can clearly see that this type of lecture is divided into several parts. Whenever the professor starts to talk about a new point in her lecture, you should write this down. For example, if she talks about causes of a disease, you write down ‘causes’ and then you put all the information related to that under this heading. Leave a blank line between each point because this will help you find the information quickly when you answer the questions in TOEFL Listening.
