小中学校での英語教育が拡充される一方で、早くから英語への「苦手意識」を持つ子が増えているというデータもあります。英語を楽しく身につけるために“おうち”でできること、取材してきました。

「Fold a square diagonally, we can make two right triangle.（正方形を斜めに折ると、直角三角形が2つできます）」

　最初にお邪魔したのは、豊橋市にある八町小学校の2年生の教室です。

「こちらのクラスでは英語の授業が行われている？」（鈴木しおりアナ）
「算数の授業になります」（稲田恒久 教頭）
「算数の授業を英語で行なっている？」（鈴木）
「イマージョン教育コースという学級。国語と道徳以外の授業は英語を用いている」（稲田教頭）

　公立の小学校では全国初の取り組み、イマージョン教育。

　『イマージョン』とは、「浸すこと」を意味し、文字通り“英語漬け”で授業も生活も行うクラスを通常学級とは別に設けました。（2020年度～）

　この日の算数は、分数の授業。図形を均等に分ける方法を学んでいます。

「I think No.1 is not a half of one half.(No.1は半分の半分じゃないと思う)」（児童）
「Why?(なぜ？)」（先生）
「Beacause I think that it is not the same with this original size.(この元のサイズと同じではないと思うから)」（児童）
「こんなに文章をスラスラと英語で小学2年生が言えるもの？ここは外国？びっくり」（鈴木）

“英語漬けクラス”全校児童の約半数（143人／297人）が選択

　そんな2年生の休み時間は…。

「Yesterday, I ate SUGAKIYA, because my mom was tired to make dinner.（きのうスガキヤを食べた。お母さんが夕食作りに疲れていたから）」（児童）
「I ate Ramen. （ラーメンを食べた）」（児童）
「Yesterday, I ate（なっとうごはん）」（児童）

『グローバル社会で活躍できる人材の育成』を目的に誕生した、八町小学校の“英語漬けクラス”は、現在、全校児童の約半数（143人／297人）が選んでいます。

「（始まって）丸3年経って成果というのは、今のところどうですか？」（鈴木）
「予想するよりも早くから、子どもたちが（英語の）文字を読める。文字を見て読むということがとても進んでいると思う」（稲田教頭）

　稲田教頭によると、元々は英語の『聞く力』を主軸としていましたが、教える側の想像以上に、『読む力』や『話す力』も身についていると言います。

英語への「苦手意識」を持つ子が増加

　英語漬けの授業について、子どもたちに聞くと。

「最初は（勉強の）やり方とか戸惑った。慣れれば大丈夫でできた」（小6）
「3年間やって意外と楽しいと思ったり、普通に聞き流していても日本語と同じように（耳に）入って理解できるようになった」（小6）

「（Do you like English?）Yes! 大人になって英語を知っていれば、お友だちがいっぱいできるから」（小2）

　学習指導要領の改訂で、2020年度に拡大された小学校の英語教育。現在はどの学校でも、3・4年生から英語に触れる、外国語「活動」を行ない、5・6年生では、英語を「教科」として教えています。

　一方、文部科学省によると、小学6年生への調査で、2013年度は「英語が嫌い」と答えた子が23．7％だったのに対し、2021年度には31．5％に増えているのです。

「楽しいけどちょっと苦手。ABCしか教えてもらってないのに、すぐ難しいものを覚えさせられる」（小6）
「会話になるとダメ。細かい文法ばかりで大変だから」（中1）
「一応、英会話教室も行っているけど、その場ではできるけど、家では使わない。一時のものになっちゃっている」（母親40代）
「自分も苦手だったので、なかなかうまく教えられない」（母親 30代）

英語嫌いにならないためにできることは？

　英語教育に詳しい、玉川大学の佐藤久美子名誉教授に話を聞きました。

「英語に苦手意識を持つ子どもが増えているのはなぜ？」（鈴木）
「5・6年生は『教科』になったので、算数や国語と同じで通信簿がつく。そうすると、知識や技能に重きを置いて、評価をしてしまう先生が中にはいると思う。（成績を見て）”間違えたらどうしよう””ちょっと英語は苦手だな”と思う子どももいる」（玉川大学　佐藤久美子 名誉教授）

　教科として成績がつくことが、子どもが早くから苦手意識を持つ要因のひとつだと、佐藤教授は指摘します。

「子どもが英語嫌いにならないために、家でできることは？」(鈴木)
「親も子どもと一緒に英語の環境づくりをしたら良い。例えば、好きな洋楽を子どもと一緒に歌ってみる。好きな映画があったら一緒に見てみる。コミュニケーションの必然性が生まれる場をつくることが必要」（佐藤）

お金をかけない『おうち英語』のポイント

「Which do you like scrambled egg or sunny side up?（スクランブルエッグと目玉焼きはどっちが好き？）」
「Both of them. （両方）」

　みよし市に住む、棚橋さんファミリー。7歳の長女・ゆうきちゃんが生まれてからすぐに、おうちで『英語の環境づくり』を実践してきました。

「（子どもに）英語を身につけてほしいなと思ったが、教材が高いし、インターナショナルスクールに入れるのも抵抗があった。自分で始められないかと思ったのがきっかけ」（棚橋理紗さん）

　お金をかけない『おうち英語』そのポイントとは？

「Do you like custard on your cornflakes?（コーンフレークにカスタードをかけるのは好き？）」

　まずは、図書館で英語の絵本を借りること。理紗さんによると、大きな図書館でなくとも、意外と豊富にそろっているそうです。すべて借りてしまったら、最寄りの図書館以外から取り寄せる手も。

「Do you like jam? （ジャムは好きですか？）」

海外の教育系動画で“英語漬け”に

　次に、テレビを見るなら英語のアニメを！YouTubeで見られる海外の教育系動画は、クセになるリズムの曲やカラフルな映像で、毎日でも“英語漬け”に！？

そして、一番大事なのは「Still more, We.」「Yes, still more, We.」遊びも、食事も、とにかく英語で話しかける！

簡単な単語でも良いので、細かい発音を気にせず、「話す姿勢」を見せ続けることが大切なんだとか。

「（英語は好き？）英語の遊びが好き。喋ることが楽しい」（棚橋さんの長女・ゆうきちゃん）

　ちなみに理紗さん、ゆうきちゃんが「工作好き」なことに目をつけて、いまや、お友達や近所の英会話講師を招いて英語の「アート教室」を開くまでに。

「Marina, what are you making? （マリナ、何を作っているの？）」（先生）
「dog. （犬）」（子ども）
「A dog! cool! （犬！かっこいいね！）」（先生）
「子どもが好きなことを理解できるのはママ。自分の子どもがやりたいことがあれば、それに対して（英語で）レスポンスをすることが良いと思う。毎日、知らない間に英語に触れさせられる環境づくりが大切かなと思う」（棚橋さん）

ゲームをしながらオンライン英会話

　おうちでできる「英語の環境づくり」。続いては…

「The enemies are moving to the 1st floor.（敵は1階に移動中）」（安味純志くん）

　小学4年生の純志くんが夢中になっているのは人気ゲームの「フォートナイト」

　実はこれ、オンラインの英会話教室なんです。

「英語の習い事がなかなか続かず、このままだと英語嫌いになってしまうのが心配になった。ゲームが大好きなので、ゲームをしながら楽しくできれば」（母・安味祥代さん）

　全国の受講者は、ここ3カ月で約3倍に増える人気ぶりなんだそう。

「What do you have in your Inventory?（武器庫には何がある？）」（先生）
「In my Inventory, I have an ex-caliber rifle,and submachine gun and assault rifle.（持っているのはエクスキャリバーライフル、それと、サブマシンガンとアサルトライフル）」（安味純志くん）

　純志くんは、始めて約1年で、英検準2級を取れるまでに英語が上達。さらに、お母さんの祥代さんにとっても、良かったことが。

「友だちどうしでフォートナイトをしていくと、ケンカになったり、お互いに暴言を吐いたり。私のほうがストレスだったけど、先生が大人というのもあり、言い合いになるわけもない。ゲームもありかなと肯定的な感じで（ゲームをする純志くんを）見れるようになった」（安味くんの親）

「The teacher's gaming skill is really good, and we can talk in English. So I like the gaming.(先生はゲームが本当にうまくて、英語で会話できる。だからゲーミング英会話が好き)」（安味純志くん）

　親世代よりずっと早い時期から、英語に触れ始める現代の子どもたち。

　子どもの『好き』を一緒に楽しむことが、上達への一歩と言えそうです

子どもの英語教育『中学英語の壁』

　玉川大学の佐藤名誉教授によると、今の中学英語は、小学校とがらりと変わり『文法』重視に。

　難易度・覚えるべき単語数もアップ
　⇒小学校で英語を楽しんでいた子が「つまづく」要因に

　そこで新年度、中学校に上がる親子に春休み中取り組んでほしいことが…

　1ページ1行ほどの簡単な英語の絵本を音読し真似して写す＆褒めてあげること。
⇒小学校英語であまりやらない「読む」「書く」に慣らし、

　自信をつけてあげることが中学英語への備えになるそうです。
