Have your child learn with a real teacher, Ms Rachel!

The toy used in this video has small parts and is not for children under 3 years old.

Learn the alphabet, letters, letter sounds, and phonics with fun ABC Acorn Toys! In this Toddler Learning Video, you will learn all 26 letters of the alphabet and all of their sounds! We also show both the uppercase and lowercase letters to help your child become familiar with both. After all of the letters and sounds we will show the alphabet song. Phonics, phonics songs and learning letter sounds are an excellent way to start helping your child learn to read. You will also see hand cues for many of the sounds. We wanted to create a video with all of the letters and all of their sounds, that also showed a catchy and easy to remember song to practice the sounds. We know you will love learning your ABCS with Ms Rachel and her team of experts in early childhood education.

If your child learns to identify their letters (uppercase and lowercase) and even some of their letter sounds before preschool and kindergarten, they will be in excellent shape! You should also focus on teaching them social emotional skills such as how to share, take turns, what to do when another child takes a toy they are playing with, how to handle big emotions and self regulation. Social emotional skills are incredibly important for success in preschool!

If you think your child has a speech delay or is not meeting their milestones, definitely talk to your pediatrician now. Also, call early intervention. Every state in the United States has Early Intervention. You may qualify for free speech therapy or other therapies through your state's early intervention program. You can also get evaluated by a private speech therapist. The earlier you do this, the better! Sometimes kids need speech, OT and/or physical therapy.

Ms. Rachel has a masters degree in music education from NYU. She studies early childhood education and leadership through courses and trainings and Harvard and Bank Street College. She has also been a toddler teacher at a school for children with special needs including autism, apraxia, speech delays, developmental delays, down syndrome and cerebral palsy. She has worked in homes to support families with children with special needs. She believes all children are gifted, precious and our teachers as well!

まずは小学6年生向けの問題に挑戦してもらいたいと思います。「テープを直線で切って、中に2つの三角形を作ります。この三角形の面積についてどのようなことがわかりますか」と問われ…

（1）「お」の面積の方が大きい
（2）「か」の面積の方が大きい
（3）「お」と「か」の面積は等しい
（4）このままでは比べることができない

この4択の中から当てはまる答えを選ぶ問題です。正解は（3）の「お」と「か」の面積は等しいが正解となります。

これは今年4月に実施された「全国学力テスト」の問題で、正答率は21.1％でした。テープの辺に三角形の頂点がどちらも接していることから、2つの3角形は高さが同じと気づけたか、そして、答えを選んだ理由を自分で説明する必要があったので、ハードルが上がったのかもしれません。

そして、今回の全国学力テストでは、「英語を話す力」についても課題が浮き彫りになりました。

■英語を「話す力」に課題…平均正答率は厳しい結果に　1問も正解できなかった生徒は6割以上

まずは、英語を話す力がどうなっているのか見ていきましょう。

今年の全国学力テストは、小学6年生と中学3年生、約190万人が参加しました。小学6年生には国語と算数。中学3年生には国語と数学に加えて、4年ぶりに英語のテストも行われました。7月31日にその結果が公表され、それぞれの科目の平均正答率が出ました。英語については「聞く・読む・書く問題」は46.1％でした。しかし、「話す」の平均正答率は12.4％と厳しい結果となりました。

どんなテストだったのか見ていきます。英語のスピーキングテストは今回2回目ですが今回、初の取り組みとして「オンライン形式」で実施されました。

テストの実際の様子では、学生たちはヘッドセットをつけ、1人1台の端末を利用します。スピーキングテストは、生徒が回答した音声をオンライン上に録音して、それを文部科学省側に送信する形で行われました。スピーキングの問題は5問ありましたが、1問も正解できなかった生徒は6割以上となりました。かなり難易度が高かったことがわかります。

どんな問題だったか。正答率が最も低かった問題が「ニュージーランドから来た留学生の環境問題についての英語の発表」で、「日本では店でレジ袋を売ることをやめるべきだ」という留学生の意見を聞いて、自分の意見を英語で答えるものでした。この発表を聞いた後、考える時間は1分だけで、その直後に30秒間で自分の考えとその理由を英語で答えないといけません。なかなかの難易度で、正答率は4.2％にとどまりました。

正解できなかった4割近くの生徒からは「聞いたことを理解したが、話す内容が思い浮かばなかった」などとの声もありました。

文部科学省などは、問題の場面設定が複雑で難易度が高かったことや、生徒がスピーキングテストの仕様に慣れていなかったことなどが、正答率が低くなった要因として考えられるとしています。

英語教育に詳しい京都大学の金丸敏幸准教授も「このテストを中学生に課すのはなかなか酷」「正しい英語で回答しようとすると、大人でも10秒、20秒と時間を区切って回答するのは難しい」。さらに「面接官などとの会話なら間をとりつつ伝えたいことを話すこともできるが、デジタル相手だとよりシビアな環境になってしまった」と指摘しています。

とはいえ、「日本人にとって国際共通語である英語を話せるようになるためには、たくさんの表現に触れることが必要」と話しています。

■対話型AIで底上げ…千葉県の高校に実証事業で導入予定

今後の英語教育をどうしていくか、2つめのポイントが「対話型AIで底上げへ」です。

文部科学省は、最先端のAIを使って英語の話す力を伸ばす取り組みも始めようとしています。

早稲田大学発のベンチャー企業が、対話型のAIを開発しました。アクセスするとキャラクターが表示され、利用者の英語のレベルに応じたやりとりができます。対話の時間は1回20分程度。終了後に「文法」や「発音の正確さ」「臨機応変なやりとりができているか」などアドバイスがもらえます。

文科省はこれを、9月をめどに千葉県成田市の県立高校の生徒を対象に実証事業として導入する予定で、家庭学習に活用してもらう方針だといいます。

今回、話す内容が浮かばなかった生徒が3分の1に上りました。まずは日々の授業などで自分の考えを持つこと。そして、英語を使って表現する経験を重ねていける環境整備が求められています。

5 Steps to a Band 7 in IELTS Writing Task 2

1. Understand the question.

You must understand the question before you attempt to answer it. This way, you’ll know exactly what the examiner is looking for. One of the biggest mistakes students make is not answering the question fully, which stops them from getting a score higher than a Band 5.

To analyse the question, you must first identify the question type, then identify the keywords in the question and finally identify the instructions words. This will help you understand exactly what the examiner wants you to do with the question.

2. Plan your answer.

The students who get the highest marks in Writing Task 2 always plan their answers for up to 10 minutes. Planning helps you organise your ideas and structure your essay before you write it, saving you time and helping you produce a clear and coherent essay.

3. Write an introduction.

The introduction should tell the examiner the rest of the essay and answer the question directly. This tells the examiner that you know what you are doing straight away and helps you write your main body paragraphs.

4. Write the main body paragraphs.

This is where you give the examiner more detail. You do this by stating your main points and supporting these with explanations and relevant examples.

5. Write a conclusion.

In your conclusion, you should summarise what you already said in the rest of your essay.
