How to speak softly and elegantly

1) Pace/Slow

- Take your time
- Slow down your speech and articulate your words clearly
- Speaking too quickly can make you sound anxious or excited, which is not conducive to an elegant and soft-spoken image
- Pauses: give your words more weight and thoughtfulness
- Enunciate clearly. Mumbled speech can come across as less polished or refined
- Example: Avoid Filler Words - stop buying time, rather pause - unnecessary filler words like "um", "like", "you know", etc.

2) Don’t Gossip

- Speaking ill of others can make you seem ungracious and it's not part of an elegant conversation style.


3) Cadence and rhythm, use a measured tone

4) Use of Hand gestures

5) Emotion, voice modulation, intonation (giving stress)

- Using a monotone voice can be boring for listeners
- Try to vary your pitch and volume to emphasize certain points and keep your audience engaged.

6) Don’t be loud or raise voice

7) Using titles and names

8) Practice Empathy and Active Listening

- Show empathy towards the person you're speaking with and demonstrate that you are genuinely interested in what they are saying (ACTIVE LISTENING). Respond appropriately to their statements or questions.
- Respect the other person's turn to speak. NO Interrupting others.

9) Be Authentic

- Authenticity is elegant
- Avoid putting on a fake accent or persona
- Being true to yourself will make your words more genuine and impactful.

10) Choice of words - Never curse

- Use respectful and polite language - never curse, swear
- Avoid slangs, offensive terms,
- an extensive vocabulary allows you to express your thoughts more precisely and elegantly and with nuance. Read widely, learn new words, and understand their correct usage
- simple, Clear Language: While it's good to have a broad vocabulary, it's also important not to overcomplicate things unnecessarily. Let everyone understand.

11) Body Language

- Maintain good posture
- Maintain eye contact when speaking - BUT DON’T STARE
- Non-verbal cues can greatly impact how your speech is perceived

12) Be Appreciative and Grateful

- Remember to show appreciation and gratitude when appropriate
- Saying thank you, giving compliments, and acknowledging others' efforts contribute to elegant and kind communication.

13) Be Confident

- Confidence is attractive and often perceived as elegant
- Believe in what you say and convey it with conviction. But remember, there's a fine line between confidence and arrogance.

「学歴だけで仕事とか優位になっちゃうのはちょっと平等じゃないと思う」

大学1年生
「就活とかする時とか、第一審査は書類審査だから、やっぱり学歴で採るのが一般的なのかなというところでは学歴社会かな」

大学4年生
「学歴高いところとか、有名なところに行くと、人生トータルで見て選択肢が広がるという感覚がある」

学生（20代）
「社会に出たときに頭が良い人でも使えない人とかいるから、（学歴は）あんまり関係ないかなと思う」

「将来、何をやるにしてもある程度の学歴がないとその後の選択肢がないということを

成田さんはいわゆる“学歴社会”についてどう考えていらっしゃいますか。

イェール大学助教授・経済学者　成田悠輔氏：
みんな学歴が好きですよね。大事なのは学歴と言われているものの中に「大事なものと大事ではないものが色々と混じっていること」が大事かなと思うんです。例えば偏差値が高い学校と普通の学校、本当に違いが生まれるのか気になりますよね。実際に調べると、アメリカとかの有名な大学や高校って、実はほとんど教育効果がないという結果が出ることがあるんです。そういう意味で言うと学歴はほとんど意味がない。重要だと思い込んでるだけということが多いと思います。なので、何が意味があって意味がないのかということを周りの声に惑わされずに考えることが大事かな。

イギリスの教育専門誌が研究内容や論文の引用回数などをもとに算出した、世界の大学ランキングです。▼1位：イギリス オックスフォード大学 ▼2位：アメリカ ハーバード大学
▼3位：イギリス ケンブリッジ大学・アメリカ スタンフォード大学。そして日本の大学は39位に東京大学、68位に京都大学となっています。東大、京大ともに前年と比べて順位が下がっています。さらに、100位以内に入っている大学のうち、アジアで見てみると中国が7校、香港が5校となっていて日本は2校というデータもあります。

小川キャスター：
日本の立ち位置というのはどう見たらいいでしょうか。

成田氏：
これは必ずしも日本人の学力や能力が落ちているという単純な話ではないと思います。
日本はどんどん若い人が減っているので、同じような能力を持った人たちがいたとしても、単純に頭数が減っているので中国やアジア、アメリカなどの国と比べると相対的に落ちていくのは仕方がないのかなという見方もできると思います。これを大学だけの問題として見てもあまり意味はなくて、日本という国とか経済全体が段々縮んで、他の国と相対的に見た場合に衰えてることの一つの表れが、この大学ランキングなんだと。

小川キャスター：
成田さんがいらっしゃるイェール大学は世界の大学ランキング9位ですが、日本の大学との違いは？

成田氏：
一番わかりやすい違いは、日本の大学は基本的にほとんど日本人だけでやりくりしていますよね。先生も学生も日本人です。アメリカのトップ大学は先生も学生も世界中から来ていて、様々な言葉を喋る人たちが混じっていて、英語もすごい訛りがある英語の方が多い。そういうところが一番わかりやすい違いですかね。だから元々使える才能のプールみたいものが全然違うところが一番大きいですかね。

小川キャスター：
魅力的だと感じて多くの人材が世界から集まってくるということですか。

成田氏：
