MESSAGE TO YOU 😊
Thanks so much for being a part of our community. Learning English is an enriching experience that brings everyone all around the world closer together. Be sure to say “Hello” and write to us in the comments. We love hearing from all of you.
THANKS FOR WATCHING!
The IELTS and TOEFL writing section measures your Lexical Resource, meaning your ability to use a variety of words and expressions. One way to lose points is to repeat words, or to use the same vocabulary that most other writers are using in the same situations.
For example, the words decide, choose, believe, consider, get, buy, negative, drawback, and disadvantage are commonly used words in the IELTS and TOEFL writing section, especially the essay.
In this video, we offer some alternatives:
elect to, opt to/for
hold, deem
acquire, procure
detriment
While these may not seem to be “big” words, they are highly effective, less common, and most importantly, they are correct. See them used in examples, with explanations.

IELTS / TOEFL Vocabulary: 10 Compound Words (closed)
English vocabulary offers writers a lot of variety. It allows us to join existing words to create new ones in the form of compounds.
🔹 There are three types of compound words:
✔ Open: head coach, ice cream, mobile phone, living room, fat free
✔ Hyphenated: blue-eyed, self-study, well-being, soft-spoken
✔ Closed: bedroom, makeup, basketball
In this video, we look at 10+ closed compounds that can be used in academic writing to satisfy the lexical resource component of the writing section:
▪firsthand (secondhand) ▪widespread ▪upside/downside ▪overestimate/underestimate ▪household ▪backbone
▪commonplace (everyday) ▪extraordinary
▪tailspin ▪foresight/hindsight

The TOEFL iBT is an academic English test that measures four skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. While ETS TOEFL offers a suite of TOEFL Test options like TOEFL Junior, TOEFL Essentials, and TOEFL Paper Edition, this video will primarily focus on the most popular version of the test, the TOEFL iBT.
