Gulliver's Travels (NEW) Cartoon | Bedtime Stories for Kids in English

Gulliver's Travels, or Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships (which is the full title), is a prose satire[1][2] by Irish writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift, that is both a satire on human nature and the "travellers' tales" literary subgenre. It is Swift's best known full-length work, and a classic of English literature. He himself claimed that he wrote Gulliver's Travels "to vex the world rather than divert it".

The book was an immediate success. John Gay remarked "It is universally read, from the cabinet council to the nursery".[3]

In 2015, Robert McCrum released his selection list of 100 best novels of all time in which Gulliver’s Travels is listed, as "a satirical masterpiece".[4]

THE UGLY DUCKLING STORY:
It is a beautiful summer day. The sun shines warmly on an old house near a river. Behind the house a mother duck is sitting on ten eggs. "Tchick." One by one all the eggs break open.
All except one. This one is the biggest egg of all.
Mother duck sits and sits on the big egg. At last it breaks open, "Tchick, tchick!"
Out jumps the last baby duck. It looks big and strong. It is grey and ugly.
The next day mother duck takes all her little ducks to the river. She jumps into it. All her baby ducks jump in. The big ugly duckling jumps in too.
They all swim and play together. The ugly duckling swims better than all the other ducklings.
- Quack, quack! Come with me to the farm yard! - says mother duck to her baby ducks and they all follow her there.
The farm yard is very noisy. The poor duckling is so unhappy there. The hens peck him, the rooster flies at him, the ducks bite him, the farmer kicks him.
At last one day he runs away. He comes to a river. He sees many beautiful big birds swimming there. Their feathers are so white, their necks so long, their wings so pretty. The little duckling looks and looks at them. He wants to be with them. He wants to stay and watch them. He knows they are swans. Oh, how he wants to be beautiful like them.
Now it is winter. Everything is white with snow. The river is covered with ice. The ugly duckling is very cold and unhappy.
Spring comes once again. The sun shines warmly. Everything is fresh and green.
One morning the ugly duckling sees the beautiful swans again. He knows them. He wants so much to swim with them in the river. But he is afraid of them. He wants to die. So he runs into the river. He looks into the water. There in the water he sees a beautiful swan. It is he! He is no more an ugly duckling. He is a beautiful white swan.

We are already so stressed with the traffic, our jobs and assignments and now even words want to stress us. Let’s count the number of syllables for some words:

(In some cases it’s enough to count vowels in others we need to count the number of vowel sounds.)

Number of syllables:
• Japanese-3
• Dance-1
• Lonely -2
• Education-4
• Joyful-2

Many languages have regular stress patterns or fixed stress.
For example: In Finnish or Icelandic almost all almost all words are stressed at the first syllable. In Swahili one before the last syllable is almost always stressed.

Unfortunately for learners of English it’s not true. There are lots of rules but many exceptions also. So we won’t learn too many rules but just a few because that will help us understand word stress.
Word Stress Rules

*Rule 1: For most two syllable adjective and noun the stress is on the first syllable.
• SCA-ry Lion
• PAIN-ted Berries

*Rule 2: For most two syllable verbs the stress is on the second syllable.
• Pre-PARE
• Ob-SERVE

*Rule 3: For words ending in “tion” the stress is always on the penultimate syllable i.e. the syllable before “tion”
• Edu-ca-TION
• Sta-TION
• De-di-ca-TION
• Ir-ri-ta-TION

Rule 4: Let’s look at some words that can change meaning, form and pronunciation depending on the word stress:

Record
Noun: to set down or register information
Verb: to record something- audio/video

Rebel
Noun: a person who refuses to obey
Verb: to reject/ resist

Noun: usually something that is contained
Verb: to make content (satisfied)

You can use word stress rules for learning word stress however for other words you need to practice word stress. Remember, it’s very difficult to understand for the listener if the word is stressed wrongly. Therefore word stress is important.

Here’s a tip for you to master word stress: Make sure you check the stress for every new word you learn in the dictionary.

Peter Pan is a fictional character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie. A free-spirited and mischievous young boy who can fly and never grows up, Peter Pan spends his never-ending childhood having adventures on the mythical island of Neverland as the leader of the Lost Boys, interacting with fairies, pirates, mermaids, Native Americans, and occasionally ordinary children from the world outside Neverland.

Peter Pan is a cultural icon. In addition to two distinct works by Barrie, the character has been featured in a variety of media and merchandise, both adapting and expanding on Barrie's works. These include a 1953 animated film, a 2003 dramatic/live-action film, a television series and many other works.

J. M. Barrie first used Peter Pan as a character in a section of The Little White Bird (1902), an adult novel where he appears as a seven-day-old baby in the chapter entitled Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. Following the success of the 1904 play, Barrie's publishers, Hodder and Stoughton, extracted chapters 13–18 of The Little White Bird and republished them in 1906 under the title Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, with the addition of illustrations by Arthur Rackham.[2]

He returned to the character of Peter Pan as the centre of his stage play entitled Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, which premiered on 27 December 1904 in London. Barrie later adapted and expanded the play's story line as a novel, published in 1911 as Peter and Wendy.

The Story:

Once upon a time, an old woman and her husband lived alone in a little old house. The couple had no children, and being lonely, the woman decided to make a boy of gingerbread. She carefully mixed the batter, rolled out the dough, and cut out out a very nice gingerbread man. She added sugar icing for his hair, mouth, and clothes, and she used candy chips for buttons and eyes. What a fine looking gingerbread man he was! The old woman put him in the oven to bake. After he was fully done, she slowly opened the oven door. Up jumped the gingerbread man, and he ran out the door saying,"Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me! I'm the Gingerbread Man!"
The old woman and the old man ran after him, but they could not catch him.
