イェール大学助教授・経済学者の成田悠輔さんと考えるこれからの教育。学歴社会とされる日本。成田さんは「学歴と言われているものの中に大事なものと大事じゃないものが混ざっている」と語ります。日本人がコンプレックスを抱いている英語については、「英語が必要かどうか、今後、二極化していく」と予想しました。
■ 日本の教育は「柔軟性がない」 一方で学歴社会は悪くないという声も
小川彩佳キャスター：
これからの日本の教育についてアメリカの大学で教鞭をとっていらっしゃる成田さんと一緒に考えて参ります。
山本恵里伽キャスター：
まず日本の教育について何が問題だと思うか、街で聞いてみました。
フリーター（20代）
「（勉強が）みんな同じことを同じように作る。機械、ロボットを作るみたいな感じ。もうちょっと個性を伸ばすような教育をしてほしいと思います」
8歳と5歳の子を持つ父親（40代）
「教育全般が決まりきった答えが出るような形の教育になっていたので、柔軟性がないなと思います。自由度とか」
一方で日本の学歴社会については･･･
中学3年生
「人を測る定義として、学歴が一番わかりやすい。だから学歴社会は別に悪くはないと思う」
「学歴だけで仕事とか優位になっちゃうのはちょっと平等じゃないと思う」
大学1年生
「就活とかする時とか、第一審査は書類審査だから、やっぱり学歴で採るのが一般的なのかなというところでは学歴社会かな」
大学4年生
「学歴高いところとか、有名なところに行くと、人生トータルで見て選択肢が広がるという感覚がある」
学生（20代）
「社会に出たときに頭が良い人でも使えない人とかいるから、（学歴は）あんまり関係ないかなと思う」
中1・高1の子を持つ父親（40代）
「将来、何をやるにしてもある程度の学歴がないとその後の選択肢がないということを
なんとなく意識していて、一定以上の高校・大学に行った方が周りのレベル、その中で切磋琢磨してほしいという思いはちょっとやっぱりある」
■成田悠輔さんに聞く日本の“学歴社会” 「意味あるもの、ないもの、考えることが大事」
小川キャスター：
成田さんはいわゆる“学歴社会”についてどう考えていらっしゃいますか。
イェール大学助教授・経済学者 成田悠輔氏：
みんな学歴が好きですよね。大事なのは学歴と言われているものの中に「大事なものと大事ではないものが色々と混じっていること」が大事かなと思うんです。例えば偏差値が高い学校と普通の学校、本当に違いが生まれるのか気になりますよね。実際に調べると、アメリカとかの有名な大学や高校って、実はほとんど教育効果がないという結果が出ることがあるんです。そういう意味で言うと学歴はほとんど意味がない。重要だと思い込んでるだけということが多いと思います。なので、何が意味があって意味がないのかということを周りの声に惑わされずに考えることが大事かな。
■世界大学ランキング2023 東大39位・京大68位 前年よりも順位ダウン
山本キャスター：
イギリスの教育専門誌が研究内容や論文の引用回数などをもとに算出した、世界の大学ランキングです。▼1位：イギリス オックスフォード大学 ▼2位：アメリカ ハーバード大学
▼3位：イギリス ケンブリッジ大学・アメリカ スタンフォード大学。そして日本の大学は39位に東京大学、68位に京都大学となっています。東大、京大ともに前年と比べて順位が下がっています。さらに、100位以内に入っている大学のうち、アジアで見てみると中国が7校、香港が5校となっていて日本は2校というデータもあります。
小川キャスター：
日本の立ち位置というのはどう見たらいいでしょうか。
成田氏：
これは必ずしも日本人の学力や能力が落ちているという単純な話ではないと思います。
日本はどんどん若い人が減っているので、同じような能力を持った人たちがいたとしても、単純に頭数が減っているので中国やアジア、アメリカなどの国と比べると相対的に落ちていくのは仕方がないのかなという見方もできると思います。これを大学だけの問題として見てもあまり意味はなくて、日本という国とか経済全体が段々縮んで、他の国と相対的に見た場合に衰えてることの一つの表れが、この大学ランキングなんだと。
小川キャスター：
成田さんがいらっしゃるイェール大学は世界の大学ランキング9位ですが、日本の大学との違いは？
成田氏：
一番わかりやすい違いは、日本の大学は基本的にほとんど日本人だけでやりくりしていますよね。先生も学生も日本人です。アメリカのトップ大学は先生も学生も世界中から来ていて、様々な言葉を喋る人たちが混じっていて、英語もすごい訛りがある英語の方が多い。そういうところが一番わかりやすい違いですかね。だから元々使える才能のプールみたいものが全然違うところが一番大きいですかね。
小川キャスター：
魅力的だと感じて多くの人材が世界から集まってくるということですか。
成田氏：
