http://www.englishanyone.com/power-learning/ Learn to express yourself confidently in fluent English and sound like a native speaker with our FREE Power Learning video course!

Grow your English vocabulary!

Grow your English vocabulary and use more colorful language with our
interactive flashcards! Listen carefully to the questions and
sentences.

Remember that subjects and verbs must agree! I walk. He walks!

Also remember that subjects and verbs can reverse in questions. How is
he? He is happy!

Let's take a look at our first character. A diver is swimming and is
surprised by a giant squid! How does he feel? Is he scared? Is he
surprised? Is he nervous? The squid is very close, but the diver's
face doesn't look worried. We think he looks awed! To be awed is to
experience a wide range of amazing emotions. You may experience fear,
happiness, and deep respect when awed. To be awed is to see something
amazing that changes your life. What are you awed by?

What about this character? Does he look pleased? Is he happy? Is he
excited? Is he mad? This is a scarecrow, and it should be keeping
crows away. Unfortunately, this scarecrow isn't doing a very good job.
He also can't move and is being picked at by the crows. He looks more
than unhappy. He looks bitter! To be bitter means to be both unhappy
and angry when you're unable to change your situation. When have you
felt bitter?

Have a look at our next character. Is he a rock star? Is he famous? Is
he loved? In his glasses we see tons of fans. Do they look happy to
see him? When something is interesting, you want to pay attention to
it and explore it. But a more appropriate word in this instance would
be captivating! Captivating is stronger than interesting and you are
really pulled in by something that captivates you. Is this video
captivating?

Our next pair of characters looks like a typical fat guy/skinny guy
duo that you see on TV shows. Are they friends? Are they having a good
time? When you see something so many times that it becomes boring and
common, it becomes clichéd. Expressions can be clichés, too. The
phrase, "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link," has been used
so many times that it's become common and clichéd. Can you think of
any clichés?

Our next character is going fishing. Does he look scary? Is he evil?
This boy is being more than mean by fishing in a goldfish bowl; he is
being cruel! While being mean is to do something bad to someone else,
a cruel person is happy when hurting others. The boy in this
interactive flashcard knows that the fish has no chance and is
delighted by it. Don't be cruel to others!

Does this character look excited? Is he looking forward to life? What
is he thinking about? In his hat we see an image of a church and
graveyard. The scene is dark and grim. While it's easy to say that
this character looks sad, we want you to have fun using a more
colorful word like dejected! To be dejected is to feel very down.
Maybe he's thinking about death. What's in your hat?

Our next flashcard is a tricky one. Is the man rich? Is he well-known?
The man has an eye patch, so something terrible may have happened to
him. But he also has a thick mustache and a bow tie. Is he a spy? Is
he intelligent? We think he looks distinguished! To be distinguished
is to be marked by eminence or excellence. Maybe he's a war hero! Do
you know anyone distinguished?

Have a look at our last character. Does he look like he's having a
good time? Is he energetic? Is he positive? What happened to him? He's
wearing the crown and robes of a king, but he is lost and floating at
sea far from his castle. He is alone, tired and helpless. You can say
he looks depressed, but a more colorful word would be despondent. To
be despondent means to be extremely sad and depressed. You are sad
when the movie you want to rent isn't available. You are despondent
when your home is blown away by a tornado. Have you ever been
despondent?

Go back and watch this video many times so you remember the words and
get a good understanding of how subjects and verbs agree. Practice
repeating the sentences and then get out and use the words and phrases
with native speakers! Have fun and enjoy getting fluent in English!

In order to do well on the TOEFL, you need to have a broad vocabulary. You will lose points if you repeat the same basic words over and over again. Therefore, knowing a variety of vocabulary words and synonyms is very important!

Today, we’re going over vocabulary words that are “important” in two different ways: they are important to know for the test, and they also happen to mean “important!”

Words that mean “necessary”

One of the meanings of “important” is “necessary.” So let’s begin by talking about words that mean “necessary.” Something that’s necessary is something you need to have. If you don’t have something that’s necessary, there will be a problem. “Necessary” can also refer to something that absolutely must happen. The following three words mean “necessary:”

(to be) vital
(to be) crucial
(to be) critical

Imagine that you’d like a certain country to be a democracy, where the people who form the government are elected by the public. In order to have a democracy, there must be honest and uncensored news. If the government controls the news, the people won’t know who to elect! So we can say that:

In a democracy, honest news is vital.

We could also use the word “crucial” or “critical” instead of “vital.”

Words that mean “main”

“Important” can also mean “main.” So next we will discuss three words that mean “main.” “Main” is an adjective that’s used to describe a thing that is the most significant, largest, or basic within its group. “Main” can also refer to the basic part of a larger idea. The following three words mean “main:”

(to be) core
(to be) principal
(to be) foundational

Although the most largest religions in the world are different from each other, most of them have something in common: they believe in being good and kind to other people. Many religions are based on this central principle. So we can say:

Most religions have a core belief in being kind to other people.

We could also use the word “principal” or “foundational” instead of “core.”

These are a lot of words to learn, but make sure that you remember them! These six words are all very important :)

Are you augmenting your IELTS or TOEFL compositions with superfluous lexical specimens to essay to pique the examination inspector’s awe?

hmmm... are you using too many big words to try to impress your test grader? Don’t.

In this video we’ll look at some of the errors many test-takers make when it comes to vocab and how to avoid these in order to have a higher Lexical Resource score on the writing section of the test.
1. Don’t try too hard
2. Know the words
3. Don’t fall in love with any word or expression
4. More is not better
5. Use other ways to express ideas.

You can find a thesaurus online at dictionary.com and m-w.com

TRANSCRIPT

Hi. I'm Rebecca from www.engvid.com. Do you want to get a higher score on your TOEFL, or IELTS, or TOEIC essay? In the next five minutes I'm going to show you how to do this in a really easy way. You just have to follow two easy steps. Take your essay question and find the key words there, and then replace them with synonyms. Now, that might seem very easy and obvious, but you'd really, really be surprised to know that lots of students don't do that. What they do instead is that throughout their essay they keep using the same words that are used in the essay question. And if you do that, what you're showing is that you don't have a very good vocabulary, you don't have a rich vocabulary, you don't use... You don't have many synonyms to express the same ideas and thoughts. And what you need to do instead is to show off your vocabulary, and the way you can do it is to take the question, find the key words and make sure that you can generate lots of synonyms for those key words, because if you can do that then you'll use all those kind of synonyms throughout your essay instead of repeating the same vocabulary. Isn't it kind of a shame when you only have maybe 250 words on your IELTS essay or 300 to 350 on your TOEFL essay to keep using the same vocabulary? Don't do that. Learn to do something a little bit differently.

Let's see how to do it. Okay? So I've got a sample question, here, from the TOEFL exam. A part of the question. This is... This says: "Many students choose to attend university outside their home countries." Okay? And maybe after that they said: "Do you agree or disagree?" or something like that. Okay? Doesn't matter. So, what are the...? How do you find the key words? Key words are almost any of the important words. For example: "many". Right? So if you're going to talk about this in your essay and you're going to give your opinion, then you want to use different words. So what could you use instead of "many"? Well, try to make a list. For example, I made my list: "myriad students", "countless", "an increasing number". It could be another word, it could be an expression. Anything that expresses the basic idea. And sometimes when you're using a synonym you're expanding on the idea, and that's okay, too. You're changing the idea a little bit, and that's all right. That's fine. So, that was one of the key words.

Second key word: "students". If they said "students" in the essay question, don't use the word "students" every time in your essay. Use another word, like: "pupils", or "young people", or "scholars". Okay? Again, changing the meaning. "Scholar" is not exactly students, but it's okay to use that word somewhere. It also shows you have a lot of vocabulary, rich vocabulary.

Next: "choose to". Right? Instead of saying: "...students choose to", what else could you say? You could say: "they decide to", "they opt to", "they prefer". All right? So, what I'm suggesting that you do is take some of the essay questions. Right? And when you're practicing before the exam, just from the essay questions see if you can generate lots of synonyms for the words used in the essay question. If you can do that, believe me, you're going to use those words in your essay writing.

Let's see how it continues. "...to attend", "Many students choose to attend", what could you use instead of "attend"? You could say: "to join", "to enroll in", "to apply to", "to pursue undergraduate studies" or "pursue graduate studies". All right? Again, we're changing the meaning a little bit, but it's the same basic idea. Right? Because in order to attend you need to enroll, you need to apply, etc.

"Many students choose to attend university", here's another key word. Instead of saying "university" 15 times in your essay, you might want to say: "academic centres", or "an academic program", or "institutes of higher learning", or an "educational institution", or "school", "college", "academy". Okay? Instead of the word "university". Don't keep using the same word. Use the same idea, but not necessarily the same word.

Next. Next part, key part: "...outside their home countries". Instead of saying: "outside their home countries", say: "abroad", "overseas", "in a foreign country", "away from their homeland". Right?

Now, you don't have to write this sentence again, but what I'm asking you to do is to take the question, find the key words, and see if you can come up with lots of vocabulary for that.

A key component of the IELTS and TOEFL essays is the use of vocabulary. Lexical resource is not just about using big words; it is about using the right words in the right way. This means the correct collocation, the appropriate phrasal verb or idiom, and the right synonym.

In this video, we look at some of the more common words used to discuss transportation and travel. Though some may appear simple, it is important to know their usage and the differences between similar wordings.

There is also an essay task at the end of the video for you to practice.
