In this video we are going to have a look at word stress in English. It is important to know which part, or better which syllable, in a word is more prominent so that the word sounds right and so that people understand it when we say it. You will learn that only one syllable in a word is stressed (= carries the primary stress) and we will look at examples so you can see that a stressed syllable is: 1. longer, 2. louder, 3. has a change in pitch, 4. is easier to hear and 5. results in larger facial movements. We will go over multiple examples and you will also learn how to recognise word stress in the phonemic transcript in dictionaries.

► TRANSCRIPTION
What's the difference between hurricane and Harry Kane? And what's the difference between the Super Bowl and a super bowl? Well, the answer is word stress, and it's a really important aspect of pronunciation. And today I'm going to teach you 8 simple word stress rules so that you can speak English more clearly and accurately. Let's go.

So before we start, there is a simple way for you to know where the stressed syllable is in every word in English, and that is by just learning some basic phonetics. If you look in the dictionary and see the phonetic transcription for a word, there is a little apostrophe type thing just before the stressed syllable in every word. And every word in English has just one stressed syllable. So look at these words and also listen to hear how I stress the stressed syllable in these words. Photograph, photograph. Here the stressed syllable is the first syllable, pho- photograph. Photography, photography. See the little apostrophe before the second syllable? Photography. And photographic, photographic. Here we stress the third syllable, photographic, and you have the little ' before that in the phonetic transcription. So learn some phonetics, it will make your life easier, I promise.

Okay, so let's have a look now at these 8 simple rules. Every rule has exceptions in English, so maybe we should call them guidelines, whatever you want to call them. We have 8 simple ways for you to speak more clearly using correct word stress in English. So let's go.

Okay, the first rule is related to words that have 2 syllables. So look at these nouns that have 2 syllables and tell me where the stress is. Campus, county, maker, picture, water, entry. That's right. With 2 syllable nouns, the stress goes on the first syllable. Now, listen to these adjectives. Happy, pretty, royal, mobile, local. Again, with nouns and adjectives that have 2 syllables, we stress the first syllable. And don't worry, I've put all these examples and a summary of all today's rules in a free worksheet for you. You can download that PDF and get all of these examples and rules for your reference just for you. There's a link up there and there's a link in the description too.

Okay, let's have a look at some more words with 2 syllables. Okay, rule 2 also relates to words that have 2 syllables, but in this case, we're looking at verbs. So listen to these verbs and tell me where the stress is. Repeat, collect, forgive, allow, prefer, impose. That's right. With verbs that have 2 syllables, the stress is on the second syllable. And yes, there are exceptions. Feel free to write any exceptions in the comments, but generally, this rule is true.

Now, there are some situations where we have one word that can be a verb and a noun. So what do we do in those situations? Well, that's rule number 3.

[... Due to character limit, the rest of this transcription is unavailable]

To pronounce English words correctly and clearly you have to understand Word Stress (Syllable Stress), or how some syllables stand out and receive more emphasis than others. In Part 1 of this American accent training series on Word Stress we answer the question "What is a syllable?"

Being able to identify and pronounce stressed syllables will improve the natural flow and clarity of your spoken English by leaps and bounds! This is arguably the most important concept in American English pronunciation if your goal is to sound more clear and natural in your English.

So, I've broken this lesson into three parts:

Part 1: What is a Syllable? Identifying Syllables (can you hear them all?)

Part 2: How to Stress a Syllable (exactly what you need to do to make those preferred syllables stand out!) https://youtu.be/XASBN5uMdEk

Part 3: How to know which syllable to stress (a few tips and tricks!) https://youtu.be/dQ4rUdsh_hQ

What students are saying about The Clear English Academy:

“The best part is everybody understands me when I speak and the anxiety that I felt when speaking English is gone.” Patty, native Spanish speaker

“I can speak more confidently and fluently in my daily work. It is a turning point in both my life and my career.” Jing, native Mandarin speaker

“This program is the best thing I have ever done to improve my spoken English.” Hanf, native Vietnamese speaker

“I have to say that is probably the best decision I’ve ever made regarding improving my spoken English. This program is a game changer.” Seng, native Thai speaker

“This is not just one more online pronunciation program, it's a turning point to a new level of English comprehension and interaction.” Katy, native Russian speaker

I teach using just one of many accents in the world. Please only learn it if you like it and if you are interested in learning it. I do not believe there is one “correct” accent or manner of pronunciation and I fully encourage EFL/ESL learners to expose themselves to as many varieties of English around the world to become accustomed to the beautiful variations of this world language. I focus mostly on teaching “Modern RP” (I may just say “RP” in my older videos, but to clarify, I do specifically mean “Modern RP”), however, you will hear a lovely little Yorkshire twang to my accent from time to time too. Please LOVE and BE PROUD of your accent. After all, it is part of your identity and makes you unique. 💚

In this lesson, you can learn about syllables and stress in English.
Do you know what stress means? It’s one of the most important pronunciation points in English.
When you speak English, do other people find it difficult to understand what you’re saying? If so, you might not be using stress correctly.
Pronouncing words with the correct stress can make a big difference to your English: your English will immediately sound clearer and more natural.

NOTE: there is an error at 1:41 – the stress marker in the IPA transcription of 'banana' should be on the 2nd syllable, rather than the 1st: /bə'nɑːnə/.

Continue working on your pronunciation, and get feedback from a certified English teacher. Try a lesson today: http://bit.ly/ooe-teachers.

If a hungry little mouse shows up on your doorstep, you might want to give him a cookie. And if you give him a cookie, he'll ask for a glass of milk. He'll want to look in a mirror to make sure he doesn't have a milk mustache, and then he'll ask for a pair of scissors to give himself a trim....

This book is a great first introduction to Mouse, the star of the If You Give... series and a perennial favorite among children. With its spare, rhythmic text and circular tale, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie is perfect for beginning readers and story time. Sure to inspire giggles and requests to "read it again!"
